Cabin A is an architect's cabin inspired by the International Code of Maritime Signals (ICS), long used to communicate at sea.
Arriving on the scene, the sight of a mysterious object, posed in the landscape, is revealed. Formally, the gable roof extends to the ground on the street side. The cabin seems to be anchored to the ground so as not to drift.
It is located in the Falaise area, in Petite-Rivière-St-François, near the Massif ski resort, in the magnificent Charlevoix region. The site is reached by a winding path. The trees provide privacy and the sloping terrain provides a view of the river.
Discreet and simple when approached, the interior is inviting and warm. The St. Lawrence River is revealed and the landscape unfolds through the living spaces. It is a gathering place where families and friends can feast or contemplate in peace and quiet.
The architectural and graphic signature of this project is inspired by maritime heritage and tends to pay tribute to the pilots of the St. Lawrence. The letter “A” was chosen by the correlation between the angular shape of the building and the “A” of the nautical alphabet known to all pilots. In this unique project, architecture and graphics inspire each other and push the nature retreat experience to a new level.
References to naval architecture are present but subtle. Formally, the gable roofs extend to the ground on the street side. The cabin seems to have been anchored to the ground so as not to drift. The triangulated shapes obtained are subtly reminiscent of the sails or ropes of ships. As you approach, the cabin is rather closed in on itself. The entrance is via a footbridge and a large crank door invites you to enter the wheelhouse.
The living area is completely glazed over the landscape. The living room is partially separated by a bench that folds up like the dashboards in a wheelhouse. The kitchen and dining room communicate with the large starboard deck. This large terrace offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
Inside, the cathedral ceiling rises, echoing the exterior shape of the cabin. A boat ladder allows access to a secret hiding place in the attic, which will delight the little ones. All rooms are located in the hold, a well-opened garden level on the wooded lot. This strategy makes it possible to completely free up the wheelhouse level to obtain clear assembly space. The level of the hold gives access to the land and to the protected spa under the bridge.
